Song-Do Library (Urban Book Terrain) Design Competition

While Songdo has been envisioned as a sustainable, low-carbon, and high-tech utopia, parts of Songdo feel more like a sparsely populated suburb where a lack of human warmth from neighborhood interaction is prevalent. Our design represents an opportunity to address the social problems of Songdo by envisioning the new library as an open and lively cultural destination. The project aims to connect and merge with the existing educational, cultural and civic institutions from the surrounding community and the city to ensure the library will remain a strong and vibrant institution for the citizens, and symbolize a culture for Yeonsugu, a representative city of Lifelong Learning where learning should be enjoyed by any age, at anytime and anywhere. From analysing the daily flow of movement from the neighbourhood and the nearby transport network, we propose a single building where programmes are combined to create a critical mass for symbolising its cultural significance, and define the frontage and plaza to welcome the citizens coming from all major directions. It results in a triangular massing surrounded by three plazas with each differs in character and purpose. A building without front and back as a welcoming gesture.
